What is a Private Babywearing Consult?
A private consult with Avie Herman is just what you need to get started on your babywearing journey
or if you’ve hit a bump along the way and need some face-to-face guidance.
Why do You Need a Consult?
If you’re having a baby soon and want to be ready to start babywearing right out of the gate, Avie will give you all the tools you need to feel prepared.
If you need help deciding what to buy, she’ll help you find the the best baby carrier for you and your family.
If you bought or received a baby carrier as a gift but can’t figure out how to use it, she’ll teach you how to use your carrier as simply as 1, 2, 3 — literally.
If you have a new baby who hates being put down and you need to figure out how to get her into a baby carrier STAT, Avie will help you learn how to wear your baby comfortably and confidently.
Where do You Want to Meet?
First you’ll decide if you want to meet at the Fashionably Frum Babywearing Studio, located in Thornhill, or if you want Avie Herman to come to your home with all her teaching materials.
When you visit the studio, Avie’s entire baby carrier collection is right there, so you’ll be able to try anything you want.
When Avie comes to you, you don’t need to leave the comfort of your own home. She’ll bring everything you need, including a variety of carriers for you to try and weighted dolls to practice with. It would help you to have a mirror nearby to use while learning, but this is not necessary.
The Intake Form
After booking with Fashionably Frum Babywearing, you will receive a quick intake form to fill out before your consult. This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to complete and Avie uses the information you share to prepare for your personalized consult and get a sense of your unique needs. This makes your consult as productive as possible.
Who Can Come?
You can come all by yourself, even before your baby is born, as Avie has weighted dolls to learn and practice with. You can also bring your partner, mother or another support person, so that they can learn how to wear your baby too or so that they can help care for your new baby during your consult.
If you’d like to bring a friend or two with their own babies, this is considered a semi-private consult and will require more time, so please mention it when you book your consult.
You are always welcome to bring your children with you. Having older children present may be a distraction, but you know yourself and your children best, so feel free to do what works best for you. The studio has a selection of books and toys to keep older siblings busy.
Can I Bring my Baby?
Of course! Bringing your baby provides a wonderful opportunity to practice using carriers with your baby instead of a doll. Avie sets aside an hour and a half for each consult so that there is plenty of time to feed, change and soothe your baby throughout your session.
The studio is equipped with a large foam mat for playing on the floor, a range of toys for babies and toddlers (a few teethers are cleaned before each session) and a Mamaroo baby swing.
During Your Consult
The first thing you’ll do is have a seat with Avie and discuss your goals for babywearing and what you’d like to get out of your consult. It helps to know where and when you’ll primarily want to babywear, as her recommendations will differ based on your preferences.
Then Avie will helping you use a carrier that you’ve already chosen or she’ll guide you through choosing a carrier that will meet your needs. She usually demos a few options and then teaches you how to use one or two carriers of your choosing more in-depth. You may always try as many options as you’d like, but Avie’s goal is for you to leave your consult feeling confident in your ability to use one or two new carrier styles by yourself.
Avie will also troubleshoot any issues you are having, go over babywearing safety guidelines and provide babywearing tips and tricks to make using a baby carrier as easy as possible.
After Your Consult
Avie is available for follow-up support via text message. You are welcome to ask questions or send photos or videos for feedback. If you require more additional help than a quick chat can provide, you can book a 20 or 60 minute follow-up session at a reduced rate.
